“Scriptural Helps for the Newly Saved”

-By: Dr. D. S. Piper (by God’s grace)

I.     Realize that once you are saved, you can never—in any way—lose your salvation!

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”  (I John 5:13)

II.     Realize that once you have been saved, you have a dual nature—the “old man” and the “new man” (Colossians 3:9-10).  The old man is the sinful flesh, to which you are to now “reckon… [yourself] to be dead indeed unto” (Romans 6:11).  The new man, which you received at the instant of salvation, is the Holy Spirit of God Who now eternally indwells you to seal your salvation forever (Ephesians 1:13), and Who will help you to live righteously if you allow Him (see Romans 8:4) to do so through the Bible.  Now, though Christians are not perfect until they reach heaven, they are to seek to live holy lives nonetheless, by the grace of God (I Peter 1:16):

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (I John 2:1)

Thus, when you do sin after you are saved, simply confess that sin to God immediately, and ask Him to forgive and cleanse you of that sin.  That will help keep your fellowship with Him unbroken.  However, remember that NOTHING—even sinning—can make you unsaved once you are saved!

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  (I John 1:9)

III.     Realize that, once you are saved, you need to be in a Bible-believing and teaching church in order for you to begin to grow in the marvelous things of Christ!  (Generally speaking, no other type of church stands more firmly upon the Word of God than a fundamental, independent Baptist church.)

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”  (Hebrews 10:24-25 and 3:13)

IV.     Realize that, now that you are already saved and eternally secure, you should follow the Lord in Believer’s baptism.  This must be your first step of loving obedience to Christ in your new Christian life.  God commands that all new Christians be baptized:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”  (Matthew 28:19-20)

As Christians, we are to follow Jesus’ example of baptism by immersion:

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water:” (Matthew3:16)

V.     Realize you truly NEED to pray and read your Bible faithfully EVERY DAY!

“Pray without ceasing.” (I Thessalonians 5:17)

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)
